What did a Chinese Emperor "lose" right before he was overthrown?

If a Chinese emperor was overthrown, it was umed to be because he had lost the "mandate of heaven". Sometimes there was some sort of natural disaster which was taken as proof of this. It was sort of a vague theological justification for what we would call 'might makes right'.
