College reinstatement in jeopardy?

My brother was on academic probation at his college then took a semester off. When he wanted to come back this semester, he was told that he needed to write a letter of reinstatement and submit it to his school. His reinstatement was approved, but unfortunately he's going through some personal issues which has caused him to miss many days of school and now there is a possibility that he could fail this semester and get dismissed. He can't withdraw from his current courses because of financial aid purposes, and wants to take another break from school to get things straight and come back next year, but he doesn't want to get kicked out either. What should he do?
